Mother Earth: Our God

These collective thoughts as presented here in conversation form were expressed by guruji Yogiraj Shri Shailendra Sharma in discussions with disciples on several occassions

Out of the earth we have come and to the earth we shall return one day…
“Different forms of creation rise from the earth and in the end, merge back with the earth, as waves in the sea – they are individual waves and yet a part of the sea. All life depends on earth, all life originates from earth. Earth is our God, our mother. She is the basis for everything; our happiness, our sadness are all directly linked to Mother Earth. Civilizations come and go, Earth goes on forever. What is Earth’s remains on earth no matter what. We already belong to Earth, going and returning are hypothetical, WE BELONG TO THE EARTH. Bible says we came out of the dust, even dust is a part of the earth.

“She’s our sole provider; whether we are alive or dead or even if we become gods! When we are alive, we get everything from earth. Even after death, Mother Earth holds our remains – we merge back into the Earth. If we are buried our graves are formed here, if we are cremated we are burnt into ashes to become a part of the earth. All our after-life rites take place here be it shradda, tarpan (offerings to ancestral spirits) etc. Even for gods, the continuity of their existence depends on earth; their worship, followers, ceremonies, temples are all based upon Earth. The sacred rituals, yajna etc for appeasement of gods all take place here. All states of existence – living, dead or divine depend on Mother Earth. No one has EVER been able to get away from Earth – be it a renunciate, god, dead, ancestral spirit, or a living being.

“We all are bits of earth and we have an individuality, a feeling of being which we call atma (spirit, soul). Why is it so hard to conceive that Earth would have an individuality too, feeling of a super being – paramatma, the Supreme Self? Aren’t we a part of her? Even the most intelligent man depends on food – intelligence can’t survive without proper nourishment, right? We derive that intelligence, that nourishment from Earth. The whole play of consciousness goes on over here. That sole provider, should we consider it a dead planet? Or is it that her life span itself is beyond our understanding? Scientists estimate earth to be over 4 billion years old. Comparing that to an average human life span of about 60 years, how can a 60 years old person comprehend the consciousness of someone who is more than 4 billion years old! Even the thought of ever meeting a 1000 years old man sends jitters down our spine – and here we live on a 4 billion years old individual and are not even aware of it! Who can deny that earth has a consciousness? Our own consciousness depends on her. In earth’s time, we live for about half a second! How can such an ephemeral existence comprehend what does she think of, where did she come from, where will she go?

“It is believed that Earth is formed from Sun and will be destroyed much before Sun is. However, I affirm that Earth will never go away! Scientists estimate age of Earth to be about 4.5 billion years. According to ancient Hindu calculations, a day in the life of Brahma is about 4.32 billion years long. After our current Sun burns out, Earth will go in a hibernation period till she finds another Sun. This is the dark period, when life becomes inert – what is described in scriptures as when Brahma sleeps. Earth moves on after this dark period, and form a union with another Sun which will create life again. Suns may come and go, Earth will go on forever! May be she absorbs all energy from Sun. Earth is not made from Sun. It is a scientific hypothesis, but I’m now totally convinced that nothing can ever happen to Earth. Though the face of earth may change, but there will never be total annhilation of Earth. May be that’s why scriptures say our our souls are beginningless; nobody knows where they have come from because Earth is beginningless and souls are born of Earth. Earth came out of the darkness so long ago nobody remembers what exactly happened..

“Once we realize there’s no destruction of Earth, it logically follows that whoever can unite his or her consciousness with Mother Earth will remain unscathed forever. We all have viruses breeding inside our bodies but they are not our offsprings. Only one or two sperms which can ovulate in mother’s womb become our children. May be we are like that, viruses living on Earth. Those of us who can ovolute in Earth’s womb, may be only those are real offsprings of Earth. This is rarest of all secrets, about this ovolution – union with Earth’s consciousness. If she accepts you as her own, that this existence is not a virus but my own offspring, She can provide you with eternal life! Imagine how much knowledge we can gain in one billion years, how much union we can accomplish…”

Q: How shall Mother Earth identify us as her children and not viruses?

Guruji’s reply: “When we start behaving like children. Children will care for their Mother Earth, a virus will just thrive on her: increase pollution, spread disease, deplete resources – exactly like what’s happening in the world right now. A son will respect her mother, listen to her like in a family.”

“We have so many religions on earth, so many faiths. Not even a single one of them one of them postulates any theory about the origin of Earth, not even the Hindu religion. All that is said is that Earth came out of the darkness (in Greek mythology), self-formed and that She is beginningless, that’s it. There are also mythological stories about constant battle between gods and demons over earth. Reality is, whoever rules over Earth will rule the entire universe, at least the spritual/astral world. This is also one of the most secretive facts that was revealed.

“People are beginning to realize the uselessness and futility of wasting time on religious fanatism. We’ll soon understand that Mother Earth is our God. So many prophets came and preached different religions to people, yet none of them could go beyond Earth. Some worship tree spirits or mountain spirits – those are also small bits and pieces of Mother Earth; we should consider things as a whole. People believe they are going to heaven but their graves are left on earth – why don’t they take their body along? Its the truth of the matter, and people will accept the wisdom of it.

“Have you ever heard any scientist making a statement that Earth is unparalleled? We can now see millions of lightyears away. We have explored to the limits of the universe to find a planet resembling our Earth but couldn’t. No scientist ever said that Earth is unique – but I’m saying She is, one of Her kind in the whole universe. We search for water on moon and mars and at the same time pollute water on our planet!

… was quoting from Vedanta

how the world is an illusion.. Shankaracharya lived for only thirty-two years and proclaimed Earth’s existence for billions of years as illusion! You should be really careful about these things, just because somebody has been famous for a thousand years doesn’t mean he is right. Humanity is now mature enough to understand reality; all religions have gone after collecting power, money and control. They have ingrain this feeling of servitude in all of us – ‘Serve God!’ is the first sermon of all religions. All religions are politically motivated – to gain control. This concept of hypothetical invisible God is an ‘unearthly’ thing, we should all realize that. Who can defute we belong to Earth? Not to a hypothetical invisible God – She is our God. We’re also taught Vasudhaive kutumbukum – whole Earth is our family. This doesn’t apply only to humans, but to all forms of live – animals, birds, plants even bacterias! The whole family is one. Humans don’t have a copyright on Earth.”

in reply to a question about ‘atma’ and ‘paramatma’
“Atma (Self, feeling of Being) and Paramatma (Supreme Self, God) are words of female gender. Atma holds our existence. Since Earth holds everybody’s existence, it would be appropriate that She be called Paramatma – the supreme Goddess (Earth is also of female gender!).”

Q: What’s the difference between physical world and the astral world?
“The difference is the same as between your body and your mind. Your breath and mind are invisible but your body isn’t. Still, your body is an outcome (manifestation) of the invisible (mind and breath). Its similar to the five elements in our belief system – that they form together into this visible gross world. If something is intangible doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. People started saying what is invisible is the truth, and what is visible is not. That’s not correct, they both co-exist. Together, they form us, our being as parts of Mother Earth. Our breath and thoughts are not visible, Earth’s are not either.

“Yoga word literally means Union, eternal union. As we discussed earlier, to become real children we have to form communication with Mother Earth. You’ve seen Kutastha, right? Doesn’t it look like Earth with outer atmosphere?. It is said that Super Consciousness is the result of Yoga. Super consciousness doesn’t come from anywhere, its all around us. With constant practice, the yogi gradually becomes more and more aware of this super-consciousness and once he is fully aware then only forms a connectivity with Earth consciousness! That is what Lahiri Mahasaya called Kutastha Chaitanya, full awareness of Earth’s consciousness at all times. Every yogi experiences that. But this is the most difficult task. Imagine one who is billions of years old, how difficult it would be to communicate with Her. What’ll be Her heart rate, generations pass away in Her mere blink!”

From a different discussion about Samarasatva, or Equanimity
“Earth does not differentiate between castes, nationalities, races or even species. She provides to us all, equally. There’s no distinction in Her nature between sinners or divine! She provides for us all, treats us all equally. This is in essence, Samarasatva – Equanimity of Mind.”

discussion about Indian science of Mummification ..
“This Indian system of mummification is known only to a few Yogi masters. In that body never disintegrates… its not very complicated. The whole idea behind it is how to link up your existence with Mother Earth. All these are just different ways to establish our identity. Only Sidda (Master) Yogis use this system. They become real children of Earth. Siddha Yogis are immortal; if Earth accepts you as Her own, who can ever harm you!”

about Mother Earth’s human form
“Earth’s human form is very beautiful! A very beautiful dark woman donning green and sometimes reddish brown sari. Sometimes She appears sitting in padmasan (lotus posture), with fresh green baali in one hand feeding a parrot and wearing mysterious kinds of ornaments and jewelry.

“This awareness of Mother Earth is very important. Our lives are most insignificant compared to Hers. That is why we can’t communicate with her. This communication should be developed for human race to be successful. Who knows, may be She is ill and we are the viruses! Think about all the ecological and environmental problems that we have created. Earth is our God, our Mother, our everything. Everybody is a part of Earth, their heart knows She’s special even if they deny on face. She supports all forms of life but nobody even looks at her! They’d rather gaze at the sky for some hypothetical god! We should be grateful to Earth, our everything depends on Her. Yet She is rarely worshipped formally.. Its a real secret, you’ll live as long as Earth if She accepts you as Her son.

At least now we are down to earth!”

A Prophecy
We were talking about renewable energy sources, especially the possibility of generating vast amount of usable energy through magnetic force. In this context, Guruji mentioned that there’s avery high possibility that in this century, humans will discover a way to insulate magnetic field. When that happens, it’ll bring a revolutionary change to our society, with all the ways we’d able to tap the clean magnetic energy to address our household and industrial energy needs. Also, the daily exposure to magnetic field would also cause a change in our thinking process: our society will be more tolerant and more rational and open minded.

Dissolution

Guruji: “To dissolve the creation, Shiva-ji doesn’t need to take another form – He can do it in the small, human form as well. All He has to do is to create a vibration at the molecular level; all matter will come in harmonization with that, causing it to come apart and dissolve.”

Goverdhan

Guruji: “In the book Yogini Tantra, Shri Matsyendra Nath says that Goverdhan is the real Kamakhya, where Goddess Kali actually secretly resides.

“There’s a pond called Gopi Talaab near Dwarika. It is said that after Krisha’s demise, Radha-ji and all other gopis (Krishna’s childhood friends and devotees) took their lives by drowning in that pond. Radha-ji was 130years old at that time.

“In May-June 1997, I was told to go there, so I went. I’ll tell you, it was the most gloomy, depressing place I had ever visited. I invited Radha-ji and all the gopis to come back to Vraj, and to also show a sign that they were coming back. We had taken a taxi from Dwarika to Jamnagar, and it was during the hottest summer days. All our way back, a small cloud traveled right over our taxi, protecting us from the scorching heat. The driver got really scared, since rest of the sky was completely clear.

“The anklet jingling sounds that we sometimes hear in the campus must be theirs. They are happy here.”
How Demons Won Heaven

Guruji: “In Mahabharata, there’s an account that when Chitraratha beat Duryodhan, in shame Duryodhan went on to take his own life, and then demons appeared and got inside the bodies of Kauravas. In the war, all Kauravs died by weapons and if a warrior dies by a weapon, he goes to heaven. That way all demons went to heaven :-). And since all pandavas died at the hands of Ashwatthama, not by any weapons, that means they never went to heaven. Thus, demons won heaven.”

Castes of Ages, and other discussions

Creation started in br?hma?a (priestly class) age. R?va?a was the last br?hma?a king. He ruled for about 311 billion years. The destruction of Dak?a’s fire ceremony marked the beginning of the end of br?hma?a age.

With the Rama-R?va?a war, br?hma?a age ended and k?atriya (warrior class) age began. In k?atriya age, kingly class ruled. K?atriya age lasted 1.7-1.8 million years.

In 1947-50, k?atriya age ended and vai?ya (trade class) age started. Democracy was introduced, and companies (corporations) started ruling. ICS exams that Britishers introduced has made the public sector more powerful. Devotion and yoga has increased and will continue to rise.

Trade and commerce is the only way to bring all races together. Corporations will be ruling for a long time.

When everything is sold and purchased, and you have everything but you still need service, then??dra (service class) age will start. Now the question is, would vai?ya age and ??dra age go together or one after another? I have a feeling that they would both go together.

Action and Reaction
We’ve been hearing that every action has its equal and opposite reaction. It also means that every reaction will have its equal and opposite action. It is also very easy to observe that every reaction will have its equal and opposite reaction as well.

A disciple asked Guruji: Is light gross or subtle?

Guruji answered:

“Light is gross, because it can only illuminate 3 out of 5 elements of matter – Earth, Water, and Fire. It passes through the other two elements – Air and Sky – so they are not visible to us. According to the Indian thought, Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Sky are the five gross elements of material world. We are only able to see the first three, since they reflect light. Since light can only illuminate the grosser elements of matter, it is gross and not subtle.

“This also implies that anything we see, we only see 60% of it, since the two elements – Air and Sky – which light doesn’t reflect, we are not able to see. This means that even our physical appearance is only 60% visible; 40% remains invisible!

“Another important thing to note is that only those things which reflect light ultimately go through decay. Those things which don’t reflect light don’t. We don’t see the destruction of air or sky, but fire, which depends on material objects for its survival, eventually dies out. Water also gets evaporated or gets stale. And solid objects in all forms eventually disintegrate; scientists already have various forms of measurements for that.

“Decay is based on the rays of light. What doesn’t reflect light doesn’t get decayed.

“We’ve also read about Babaji that his shadow doesn’t form. This means what doesn’t reflect light must be immortal!”

Struggle

Guruji: “Struggle is never-ending. I think if the struggle in life went away, we would die of boredom! Only when you relax for a moment after the struggle is over, you feel real happiness. Then new struggle begins, with new challenges. When that finishes, you feel happy again. But the feeling becomes grander and grander with each challenge.

“If you sit around doing nothing, without any struggle, then there’s nothing else but boredom. The more opposition you face, the more positive, extra-ordinary development of your personality happens. If there are two men, one who has struggled and one who hasn’t, the one who has struggled would be more knowledgeable. And to rise or to develop, you do have to struggle.”

Q: “Milarepa’s story is so inspiring! And it’s not like he had signs from his childhood that he’s going to be a great soul.”

Guruji: “His story is very inspiring. The biggest thing is the feeling of revenge that was borne in him. That feeling gave him so much strength that not only he took revenge upon his enemies, but also used the same strength to gain knowledge and self-realization. A weak person can’t even exact revenge. They say things like ‘whatever god wants will happen’ to excuse themselves. He at least took proper revenge. And when he felt guilty about killing so many innocent people, the power that he had developed to take the revenge, he was able to use it positively. That’s why he is a legendary figure today. The feeling of revenge gives a lot of energy.”

Q: “Really?”

Guruji: “Of course! Take Ravana out of Rama’s life, what will be left? Or take Kansa out of Krishna’s life, Krishna won’t be Krishna anymore. These are the highlights of their lives. This means that the feeling of revenge is what brings meaning in life (laughs).

“Main point is that opposition should be there. Without any opposition, how will you be refined? How will you prove that I can face any kind of opposition and come out a winner? Even in bodybuilding, the training principle is called Progressive Resistance. Only by increasing resistance you develop further. So is with life.

“Now even local people (in Govardhan) have started taking notice of me. They have always been taking notice, but now finally it’s going in positive direction. Some news reporters had come, they gave us good coverage in local newspapers, about rudraksha and kalpa-vraksha trees in the campus. People are totally stunned reading about it. Last Monday they even published aboutShiva-linga.”

Q: “Aren’t people resistant to change?”

Guruji: “In the beginning everybody is resistant to change. If you tell them a new thing, the first response is always, ‘No, how can that be possible?’. It’s the same situation world over.

“That’s when I thought it was futile to explain. There were a lot of quarrels with the local people in the beginning, so I stopped talking to them. Now these days they are very anxious that I talk to them, let them inside the academy campus. I don’t pay any heed to them.

“All in all it has only benefited me. All these difficulties have developed one aspect of my personality which probably would never have developed. If somebody is coming to fight you, you could only do two things: come out to face them or bow down before them and run away. And if you bow down, you’d never be able to face yourself in a mirror again, if you have even a little bit of self-respect. I took a stand and challenged them to do whatever they could.

“Once about 60-70 people came to fight. I was by myself and with didi [Guruji’s sister, Mataji]. We both faced them, and they all ran away ultimately. That boosted our confidence significantly.”

Q: “What did they want?”

Guruji: “One thing was that when I came here, they got jealous that I bought such a big place and they couldn’t. And then I stopped their ‘free for fall’ (using campus grounds for ‘morning rituals’). So they picked a petty excuse and came to fight. My servants and the watchmen all ran away, only didi and I were left behind. And the furious face and anger that I must have developed – only they saw it, I can only imagine – all of them got scared and ran away.”

Q: “Did you get very angry?”

Guruji: “Very angry. I was ready to do anything. If someone keeps irritating you for no reason, then ultimately you can’t control the anger. Though one should have tremendous amount of self-control. If you have extraordinary physical strength, much more than average, that you can lift a man with one hand, and you lose control in the middle of a mob, only the mob will be on the losing end. The consequences may be serious. And here an average man is pretty pathetic, no more than 50-60kgs.

“These kinds of confrontations kept on going. Now we haven’t had one in a few years. Whoever came to openly fight me, they all died mysteriously. And this also created a different type of reputation. If our count is correct, so far 46 man have died in the last 9 years. It’s been very peaceful since then. I didn’t understand in the beginning what was happening. When I understood, I withdrew myself. Stayed inside and didn’t engage in fight with them.

“The main point is if you have to do a big task, a proportionally strong opposition also comes. If you are able to face it, things get progressively smother.”

Q: “Does somebody keep testing whether you can take this opposition or not?”

Guruji: “Think of it this way: I was introduced as an antibiotic drug here. An infection was spreading on a certain portion of Mother Earth, and I was introduced as with anti-bacterial properties to eliminate the infection. Struggle was inevitable. And what are we in the eyes of Mother Earth, nothing more than virus or bacterias.

“We can see the difference in 9 years. The entire area has changed. Goverdhan Parikrama has gone beyond everybody’s wildest dreams! This Guru Purnima, more than 10 million people crossed in 24 hours. Management was very good. After that, suddenly a very eerie silence has spread everywhere. No noise of quarrels, loud speakers, etc. Also, government is taking over management of temples so all the pandas [rowdy caretakers of Hindu temples] are in shock – their source of income is gone. Things are getting better.

“It has been a remarkable series of changes. Government’s attention is now finally here. Electricity used to be out for 5 days, which is almost inconceivable in the western society. Now government has ordered 24-hour electric supply, especially in Goverdhan. Tourist department gave a proposal for 66 million rupees for facelift of our campus. They’ll do the lighting, full repair, and water supply. We’ll only have to pay the bill. Agreement is between myself – the owner of the property – and the governor of UP, that archeological department will look after this property. It is the first time ever in India an agreement like this has been made between a private property owner, archeological department, and the state government.

“It took a very long time and a lot of effort, but things are looking better. We had come in absolute opposition – no friendly person around at all! Nothing beyond thorny bushes and cactus.

Q: “You have set a big example.”

Guruji: “I haven’t set this example for anyone else. It’s ultimately for my own development. The place started looking better, status increased. All my disciples got inspired, their confidence increased. Because what I have done I have taught everyone. No more, no less. Anybody can do anything. The basic thing is that the man should be prepared. There’s an English saying: Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. You have to prepare yourself. And with proper preparation, the team that forms will be of specialists. And ultimately team only performs.”
Reflections
“What is life? Transforming future into past is life.
“What is death? When all future has been transformed into past is death.
“What is immortality? Having limitless future is immortality.”
